Prince Emanuel killed the wrong animal.

Liechtenstein Prince Emanuel kills wrong brown bear as trophy on embarrassing hunt.

Shooting permit issued for the wrong bear

Brown bears are strictly protected throughout Europe. Yet with enough money, wealthy foreigners can still purchase a shooting permit. On 12 March, Prince Emanuel went bear hunting in the Carpathians and, according to the Romanian environmental organisation Agent Green, shot “the largest bear in Europe” — brown bear “Arthur”.

Brown bear Arthur
The wild animal, which was 17 years old and in perfect health, had to give up its life on 12 March.

“Just as reprehensible as the ivory trade”

Arthur was 17 years old and the largest bear ever recorded in Romania. It is clear that the Prince did not come to solve the locals’ problems, but to kill the bear and take home the biggest trophy. We are dealing with poaching since he shot the wrong bear.

Gabriel Paun, President of Agent Green

«This is just as reprehensible as the ivory trade”, says Gabriel Paun. Shooting large male animals weakens the bear population — something that has been scientifically proven. The conservationist is calling for a total ban on trophy hunting for foreign nationals.

Swiss hobby hunters on trophy hunts abroad

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Swiss hobby hunters travel abroad each year for trophy hunting. Swiss hobby hunters kill approximately 50 protected animals abroad every year, including elephants, lions, and crocodiles. The import of hunting trophies is approved by the federal government.
