Dolphin killings in the Faroe Islands
Ten days after the mass killing of 1'400 dolphins, 52 pilot whales were once again brutally killed in the Faroe Islands. OceanCare demands consequences.
Just ten days after the mass killing of more than 1'400 dolphins, a drive hunt was carried out once again yesterday, Wednesday 22 September, in the Faroe Islands.
52 pilot whales brutally killed
This time, 52 pilot whales were driven into a bay and brutally killed. The marine conservation organisation OceanCare is calling on the governments of the European Union and the European Commission to react without delay and to urge both Denmark and the regional government of the Faroe Islands to immediately put an end to the drive hunts targeting whales and dolphins.
«The current killing of pilot whales is an intolerable provocation", says Nicolas Entrup, Co-Director for International Cooperation at OceanCare. The Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark, are not part of the European Union and therefore do not consider themselves bound by whale protection regulations.
The Faroese drive hunt, which wipes out entire dolphin schools, undermines the efforts of nations to protect small cetaceans that are already under pressure from numerous threats. Anyone concerned about the loss of biodiversity must put an end to these senseless practices.

OceanCare calls for international protest
OceanCare is calling for international protest. An online petition is addressed to the European Commission and the governments of EU member states, urging them to take concrete steps with regard to the Faroe Islands. The organisation demands the official condemnation of this hunting, joint diplomatic notes calling for an immediate end to the drive hunts, and positive incentives from Denmark.
