Canton Uri in Favour of Trophy Hunting
In Canton Uri, ptarmigan and mountain hares are worth no more than a hunting experience or trophy
Trophy hunting instead of protection
In Canton Uri, mountain hares and ptarmigan continue to be at the mercy of hobby hunters. The cantonal government had proposed removing these animals from the list of huntable species. Hunting them for regulatory purposes was deemed unnecessary. It can be justified primarily by the hunting experience and the trophy.
U-turn following consultation
Despite these arguments, the cantonal government intends to continue permitting hobby hunting of mountain hares and ptarmigan. Influential consultation respondents had demanded this. Hobby hunting of ptarmigan is still permitted in three cantons, and of mountain hares in nine cantons. More on the topic of the hunting law and Switzerland.
