German Bullfighter Kills Bulls in Spain

PETA Files Criminal Complaint Against First German Female Bullfighter

Editorial Team Wild beim Wild — 3 September 2021

As the first German female bullfighter, Clara Sofie Kreutter killed two bulls in the arena in Ledaña, Spain, on 16 August.

PETA Files Criminal Complaint

After reviewing the facts of the case, PETA filed a criminal complaint with the Siegen public prosecutor's office on 31 August 2021 against Kreutteron suspicion of violating the Animal Welfare Act.The animal rights organisation is campaigning for a ban on bullfighting.

For her own pleasure and for the entertainment of paying spectators, Kreutter slowly tortured a sentient living being to deathwith repeated lance and knife thrusts. We are calling for legal consequences for Kreutter. This cruel practice must finally be consigned to the history books.

Peter Höffken, Head of the Campaigns Team at PETA

Ritual Animal Cruelty Faces Growing Rejection

Surveys indicate that most Spaniards also reject the ritual killing in the arena. In mounted bullfighting so-called toreros repeatedly provoke the bull from horseback, drive lances into its body, and systematically weaken it.The trivialisation of violence against defenceless animals can lead to emotional desensitisation among spectators.

Update 11 January 2022:The Siegen public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation against Kreutter (case no.: 41 Js 797/21). Kreutter intends to continue her career as a bullfighter and is planning 40 to 50 appearances starting from the end of February.
