Graubünden fits GPS collar on wolf from the Beverin pack
In the Rheinwald valley, a wolf from the Beverin pack has been fitted with a GPS collar. The wildlife wardens hope for a deterrent effect and new data.
On Saturday, 27 March 2021, wildlife wardens succeeded in fitting a GPS collar on a wolf from the Beverin pack near Hinterrhein in the Rheinwald valley.
GPS collar for deterrence and research
The wild animal could be tranquillised near a settlement and fitted with a GPS collar, writes the Office for Hunting and Fishing in Graubünden. The 35-kilogram wolf was released again after various samples had been taken.
High wolf presence in the Rheinwald valley
Individual wolves are staying near settlements even during the day and show little shyness towards humans. For deterrence measures to have an effect, they must be carried out at the right moment and in the vicinity of human settlements.
This very Office for Hunting and Fishing has previously intervened in the Beverin pack at the wrong time — months later — with brutal and lethal shooting as a so-called deterrence measure!
