Austria and Switzerland: Barriers to Wolf Culling Lowered
In Austria and Switzerland, the wolf — strictly protected under EU law — is increasingly coming under fire.
New Shooting Regulations
In Austria, a regulation permits wolves to be shot that are held responsible for attacks on livestock. In Switzerland as well, a new hunting ordinance came into force on 1 July with lower damage thresholds.
Livestock protection works
In Valais, attacks dropped by 55%, in Grisons by 80%. “The culls by no means replace the need for livestock protection,” says the Austrian Centre Bear-Wolf-Lynx. Hobby hunting fails as a population control measure. More on the topic of wolf protection.
