Valais: Wolf Monitoring and Livestock Protection
In Valais, a total of 51 wolves were identified in 2022. In 139 attacks, 415 livestock were killed. 2.5 million were invested in livestock protection.
51 Wolves formally identified
The Wildlife Service of Valais presented the assessment of the impact of wolf presence in the canton of Valais in 2022. 51 wolves were formally identified. In 139 attacks, 415 livestock were killed. Nearly 2.5 million francs were invested in livestock protection on the alpine pastures.
The service confirmed eight packs with reproduction. 117 of the killed animals were on protected alpine pastures, 110 on non-protectable alpine pastures and 188 on unprotected alpine pastures.
2.5 Million for Livestock Protection
The conditions were met for the issuance of three permits for individual culls. As a result, two wolves could be shot. The compensation payments made to date amount to approximately 182’000 francs.
In the summer season of 2022, nearly 2.5 million francs were invested in livestock protection, of which 1 million was financed by the canton. In the coming season, the canton of Valais will again allocate an amount of 1 million francs for livestock protection. More on the topic of wolf protection.
