USA: Hybrid Super-Pigs on the Advance
Hybrid pigs released in Canada, bred from crosses between domestic pigs and wild boar, have gotten out of control and are spreading into the USA.
Hybrid super-pigs, a cross between domestic pigs and wild boar, have gotten out of control in Canada. The new breed is now making its way into the USA.
Huntable Hybrid Super-Pigs
The problem is that the super-pigs are very difficult to get rid of. The hybrid pigs thrive in the cold because they are resilient. They can even kill a fully grown white-tailed deer, and in spring they devour countless goslings and ducklings.
Hobby Hunting Disperses Populations
The super-pigs are masters at deceiving hobby hunters. Hobby hunting disperses wild boar populations across larger areas and can undermine trapping efforts. Hobby hunting fails as population control.
Conquering the Cold
Until now, warm regions have seen the greatest growth in invasive species. Recently, invasive pig populations have also been thriving in Canada. Researchers are working on eradication through monitoring and group trapping. More on the topics of Wildlife and Environment and Nature Conservation.
