The Role of Nutrition in the Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease
A study shows: A plant-based diet reduces the risk of Alzheimer's, while a Western diet high in red meat and sugar increases the risk.
The choice of diet plays an important role in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
A detailed study entitled “Diet's Role in Modifying Risk of Alzheimer's Disease” examines the relationship between diet and Alzheimer's risk. It was found that a plant-based diet, such as the Mediterranean diet or the traditional diet in China, Japan and India, can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. In contrast, a Western diet rich in saturated fats, red meat, processed meat and sugar can increase the risk.
Ultra-processed foods as a risk factor
Highly processed foods should be avoided, as they increase the risk and lack essential nutrients.
Poverty also plays a role, as ultra-processed foods and meat are more affordable compared to nutrient-rich options and can lead to a higher risk of Alzheimer's.
Recommendations for prevention
To reduce the risk of Alzheimer's, it is recommended to prioritise fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains, and to reduce the consumption of meat, particularly red meat, saturated fats and heavily processed foods. A mindful diet can make a major contribution to the prevention of this disease.
