Sweden: 51 Wolves Killed in 7 Days So Far
The wolf hunt began on January 2 and lasts until February 15 at the latest.
51 of 75 Wolves Killed
On the seventh day of the wolf hunt in Sweden, five wolves were killed.
Trophy hunters from home and abroad have thus far killed 51 of the 75 wolves that Swedish authorities intend to have killed as part of this controversial hobby hunt.
With 75 wolves on the kill list, this is the largest wolf hunt in modern times in Sweden. Several conservation organizations expressed criticism of the decision.
Tragic Consequences for the Population
“It is tragic. It could have consequences for a long time to come,” said Daniel Ekblom of the wildlife management organization Nature Conservation Society in Gävleborg.
This year’s hunt covers 12.5 areas across the five provinces with the highest wolf density: Gävleborg, Dalarna, Västmanland, Örebro and Värmland.
Sweden’s wolf population is currently estimated at a maximum of 460 individuals. Scientists agree that at least 300 to 500 individuals are necessary to maintain a viable population. The actual requirement could be twice as high. The lower figure assumes that wolves continuously migrate from Finland to counteract inbreeding. The hobby hunt fails as population control.
