White-tailed eagle shot: hobby hunter convicted

It is the first time that a hobby hunter in Germany has been identified and convicted with the help of transmitter data.

GPS transmitter exposes hobby hunter

A hobby hunter from Salzwedel has been sentenced to a fine of 1’800 euros for killing a strictly protected white-tailed eagle. His hunting licence was confiscated. The accused was undone by a GPS transmitter attached to the eagle.

Over 2’384 victims since 2005

In the years 2005 to 2022, over 1’716 cases involving more than 2’384 victims of illegal raptor persecution became known in Germany, including 70 white-tailed eagles. “The number of unreported cases is extremely high,” according to LIFE EUROKITE.
