SBB Saver Tickets: More Public Transport Use Through Discounts
An attractive public transport system must also offer good value for money. The Price Monitor and SBB therefore agreed that SBB will offer saver tickets in long-distance travel with a total discount of 50 million francs per year in 2025 and 2026.
The share of public transport in overall traffic is to be increased. To support this goal, the Price Monitor and SBB agreed that travellers should once again be offered discounts in the form of the very popular saver tickets.
Saver Tickets with Multiple Effects
In addition to their popularity, their multiple effects were also decisive for this decision: saver tickets help keep profits in long-distance travel within an appropriate range.
Furthermore, they can lead to increased use of public transport. They have a positive effect on the modal split and, through the train-binding nature of these tickets, ensure better capacity utilisation of under-occupied trains during off-peak hours.
Discounts Instead of Penalty Prices
The Price Monitor is convinced that saver prices represent an effective and fair instrument for promoting the use of public transport and achieving desired steering effects. With this in mind, and in view of the political discussions on possible mobility pricing, it maintains that a positive incentive system (discounts) for shifting the modal split would be more effective than, for example, prohibitive pricing elements. More public transport also contributes to environmental and nature conservation .
