Prince Charles warns: Heads of state are all talk
Prince Charles shares the concern of climate activists that world leaders are merely talking rather than acting on climate protection. A call for concrete action.
British Prince Charles said on Monday, 11 October 2021, that he shares the concerns of Greta Thunberg and other environmental activists that heads of state and government are «merely talking» about climate change.
«All these young people feel that nothing is happening, and are therefore naturally frustrated. I completely understand that», Charles said in a broadcast interview with BBC TV.
He said he understood why environmental activists take direct action when they feel that politicians are not doing enough to combat climate change.
«They just talk, and the problem is making words into action», said the 72-year-old heir to the British throne, who has spent most of his life speaking out on green issues, referring to politicians and heads of state.
His views align with those of Thunberg and other young activists at a Youth4Climate event in Italy last month, when they accused the world’s leading politicians of «thirty years of blah blah blah».
Climate change will fundamentally alter life on Earth in the coming decades, even if humans are able to control greenhouse gas emissions, UN climate science advisers said in June.
The extinction of animal and plant species, the spread of disease, extreme heat, the collapse of ecosystems, the destruction of cities by rising seas, and other devastating effects of climate change are accelerating and will become apparent in less than thirty years, they said.
Charles said he understood the despair of young people and why groups such as Extinction Rebellion carry out disruptive protests.
The Prince of Wales will attend the UN Climate Conference COP26 in Glasgow alongside several other senior members of the royal family.
