Editorial Wild beim Wild — 22 August 2023

The World Day for the End of Speciesism is an international day of remembrance that aims to raise awareness of the discrimination and exploitation of animals and to advocate for their rights.

On the World Day for the End of Speciesism, various events and actions take place around the world to draw attention to the suffering of animals in areas such as agriculture, hunting, the entertainment industry, and animal testing. It is a day for reflecting on our ethical responsibility towards animals and how we can contribute to ending speciesism. In 2022, 114 organisations coordinated 109 actions in 27 countries. This year, too, will set a new participation record!

By supporting the World Day for the End of Speciesism, we can help create a world in which all living beings are treated with respect and their right to a dignified life is recognised.

It is important to recognise that speciesism does not only concern the discrimination of animals, but also has an impact on the environment and human health. By reducing our consumption of animal products and advocating for a more sustainable and ethical way of life, we can help reduce the exploitation of animals while at the same time bringing about positive changes for ourselves and our planet.

One way to participate in the World Day for the End of Speciesism is to take part in events and actions organised by animal rights organisations and activists. These events offer the opportunity to connect with like-minded people, learn about animal rights issues and discuss practical solutions.

Beyond that, we can also help combat speciesism in our everyday lives. By reconsidering our dietary habits and trying plant-based alternatives, for example, we support more sustainable food production while simultaneously reducing the suffering of animals in factory farming. Conscious consumption of cosmetic and household products can also make a contribution, by choosing cruelty-free alternatives.

The World Day for the End of Speciesism is a reminder that animals are sentient beings with rights and needs. By actively advocating for their rights and challenging speciesism, we can bring about positive change and create a more just world for all living beings.

This Saturday, on 26 August 2023, at 2:00 PM at Bahnhofplatz in Bern, a demonstration under the motto “Animals into Politics” will take place. It is organised by our colleagues from Tier im Fokus (TIF). Together we are committed to ensuring that the needs of our sentient fellow beings receive greater attention in politics. Do come along!
