New wolf pack confirmed in Graubünden
A third wolf pack has made its home in the canton of Graubünden. A wolf pair living near the Piz Beverin has produced offspring. At least five pups have been confirmed.
Observers had provided well-founded evidence of the wolf pair and its pups, the Graubünden Office of Hunting and Fisheries announced on Wednesday. According to the office, the wolves are located in the Heinzenberg-Safien-Beverin region.
Hannes Jenny, deputy head of the Office of Hunting and Fisheries, said the wolf pair in central Graubünden had migrated from Italy. The pair has been present in the region for approximately a year and a half.
Two wolf packs had already been confirmed in Graubünden: one at Calanda in the Chur Rhine Valley and one at Ringelspitz on the border between the cantons of St. Gallen, Glarus, and Graubünden. At Calanda, young wolves have been born seven times already. At Ringelspitz, offspring were recorded for the first time last year.
«It is quite possible that a pack will permanently establish itself here.»
Hannes Jenny, Graubünden wildlife biologist
Wolf pups can typically be confirmed between mid-July and the end of August. According to Jenny, there are currently around two dozen wolves in Graubünden in total.
Fifth pack in Switzerland
The newly discovered wolf pack in central Graubünden is the fifth known pack in Switzerland overall, as confirmed by the Swiss predator research centre Kora upon request.
In addition to the three packs on Graubünden territory, there is one in Ticino, where the wolves live in the Morobbia Valley, a side valley of the Magadino plain. Another wolf pack has established its territory in the central Valais.
