Only 120 to 150 individuals in the French Jura

The Eurasian lynx reappeared in the French Jura in the late 1970s. A study estimates the number at 120 to 150 individuals. Inbreeding depression, poaching and collisions with cars could lead to the species becoming extinct once again.

Lynx distribution

To prevent extinction, which could occur in around 30 years, scientists recommend introducing new genetic material.

300 lynxes in Switzerland

According to the latest estimates from the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), around 300 lynxes live in Switzerland. The lynx population is thus the largest in the Alpine region. Switzerland participates in reintroduction projects in neighbouring countries. More on the topics of species conservation and wildlife.
