Frog Legs Festival: Suffering of Nature and Animals
Every year at the end of April, the French town of Vittel hosts the “Festival of Frogs.” Frog meat has barely any flavour of its own. It only becomes a delicacy through garlic or herbs — served with French fries.
350’000 Frogs for a Festival
During the «Festival of Frogs» in Vittel, around 20’000 visitors consume approximately seven tonnes of frog legs in just two days. «For this event alone, up to 350’000 frogs are caught», reports Charlotte Nithart of Robin des Bois.
A Deadly Domino Effect
The EU imports 4’070 tonnes of frog legs annually. In India and Bangladesh, frog populations collapsed, leading to mosquito plagues and crop failures. Turkish researchers warn that larger frog species could be extinct by 2030. More on the topics of species conservation, biodiversity and animal rights.
