Dam Collapse Ukraine: Apocalyptic Landscape
The people of Kherson have survived 15 months of war, occupation, and constant Russian artillery fire. But it was the flooding following the dam collapse at Kakhovka that stripped tens of thousands of their livelihoods.
Tens of thousands must be brought to safety
Following the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region, tens of thousands must be evacuated from their flooded home towns.
The Dnipro has locally flooded cemeteries, landfills, and latrines. The floodwaters contain pathogens and chemicals. Massive fish die-offs have already been recorded along the riverbanks, with estimates of up to 95’000 tonnes of dead animals reported.
Ukrainian authorities are warning against water consumption. This is all the more alarming as the entire region is heavily dependent on the Dnipro river: In the Kherson region, the water supply has virtually collapsed entirely, in Zaporizhzhia by three quarters, and in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast by 30 percent. Kyiv now plans to build dozens of kilometres of new water pipelines at a cost of the equivalent of 40 million francs in order to open up alternative supply routes.

PETA rescues animals from the flood
PETA Germany, together with PETA's Global Compassion Fund, has established the largest charitable project in PETA's history to date. In Kharkiv, safe shelters with provisions for currently 1’000 animals have been created, a veterinary clinic has been co-established, a neutering project launched, vehicles provided, and more than 1’400 tonnes of vegan animal feed produced and transported into the country. In total, more than 11’000 animals have been rescued since the outbreak of the war and mostly reunited with their owners or adopted by caring families.
These are very sad scenes that can be seen everywhere. The animals are swimming for their lives, not knowing where to turn. Pure panic is written across their faces. Dogs and cats are trying to climb up somewhere. Animals in stables are mostly at the mercy of the floodwaters and their slow death. There must be millions of living creatures being destroyed. An unimaginable ecocide. More on the topic Environment and Nature Conservation and Animal Protection.
