Bird window films are better applied on the outside

They are common on large windows or glass facades: films intended to protect birds from collisions.

Hundreds of millions of birds die every year

Every year, hundreds of millions of birds die from flying into glass panes. A new study in PeerJ shows: window films only work when applied to the outside of the glass.

“People who buy stickers and put them on their windows want to do good,” says study author John Swaddle. “You have to take the extra step of applying them to the outside of the window.”

Patterns are crucial

Applied to the outside, the tested products increased window avoidance by up to 47 percent. On the inside, they were ineffective. Raptor silhouettes alone do not help — a pattern is required. Together with habitat loss, climate change and cats, nearly three billion birds have disappeared from North America since 1970. More on the topic of environment and conservation.
