Beavers return to England

Several centuries ago, beavers were a lively presence in England's rivers. The waterways were covered with dams, and the trees along the streams and rivers bore the characteristic tooth marks.

Beavers were hunted to extinction around 400 years ago, but in an effort to reintroduce them, conservationists have reintroduced beavers to England. They hope that the semi-aquatic rodent, which plays an important role in ecosystems around the world, will thereby become re-established.

“It has been a very rewarding journey, learning what beavers need, how they affect the environment and what benefits they provide to other animals and plants,” said landowner Mandy Lieu to CBS News.

A keystone species for ecosystems

“Over time, these beavers will improve the health of the ponds there by altering the habitat and retaining sediments,” explained the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. “They will lead to greater diversity in the habitats, which in turn will cause wildlife in the wetlands to flourish.”

Beavers are considered a “keystone species”, as they create wetlands inhabited by birds and insects, while beaver dams retain water and reduce the risk of flooding.

“We are delighted that another county is providing a home for beavers as part of the reintroduction efforts for this species,” said Dr. Roisin Campbell-Palmer, Head of Restoration at the Beaver Trust. “We are working towards returning beavers to the wild.”

Bison are also being reintroduced

The United Kingdom is currently attempting to restore its natural biodiversity to restore. In July 2022, wild bison were reintroduced in Kent, England, where they once roamed freely.
