Culling request for the regulation of the Beverin pack

The canton of Graubünden is applying for the regulation of the wolf pack at Piz Beverin.

This is already the third such request this year across Switzerland. In the case of the Beverin pack, there have reportedly been not only attacks on livestock, but also threatening behaviour by wolves towards shepherds and sheepdogs.Even if such reports are difficult to verify, it is right and understandable to take them seriously.

Lack of livestock protection as the root cause

The ongoing attacks on livestock by the Beverin pack are a consequence of the initially absent livestock protection measures on various alpine pastures within the pack's territory.This confirms that inadequate herd protection can also become a problem for flocks that are otherwise protected.

The fact that the canton of Graubünden can regulate the wolf pack not only by shooting cubs but potentially also the alpha male has only become possible through the revision of the Hunting Ordinance last month. This has led to a comprehensive expansion of wolf management. At the same time, however, the protection of wolf packs has been significantly weakened, and the destruction of packs is being accepted as an outcome.
