Actress and comedy star Anke Engelke follows a vegan diet – out of conviction.

On meat substitute products, however, she has a clear opinion.

The entertainer, born on 21 December 1965 in Montreal, Canada, considers meat substitute products for vegans «utterly absurd«. «Vegetables are vegetables and bacon is bacon«, said the comedian and TV host on the podcast «Talk mit K» from the «Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger».

«I find it difficult, because people (…) are being led to believe: you actually need meat.» On vegan cheese, the 55-year-old also remarked: «That just doesn’t work.» As a vegan, she gets along just fine, Engelke said, because she does not see it as a system of prohibitions but as a «fully conscious decision«.

Vegan and vegetarian: what is the difference?

Vegans eat no animal products whatsoever, while vegetarians do consume dairy products such as cheese. In recent years, products that taste like sausage or meat but have a plant-based foundation have become increasingly fashionable.

Engelke, who also appears again in the second season of the Amazon show “Last One Laughing” (available from early October), has been a vegetarian since her teenage years. The step to a fully plant-based diet was therefore not a difficult one for her. “If anyone ever sees me eating a sausage made from real meat or drinking milk, or if I suddenly have plump lips and no more wrinkles on my face, please call the police immediately. Then I’ll have been kidnapped and forced into it.
