Ban on lead-containing ammunition narrowly defeated

The National Council has narrowly rejected a motion for a ban on lead-containing ammunition by 99 to 94 votes. Although the Federal Council recognized the need for action and recommended acceptance of the motion, the long-overdue ban was rejected.
The highly toxic heavy metal is ingested by wildlife when they feed on the entrails left behind by hobby hunters. In Switzerland it has been documented that golden eagles and bearded vultures have died from lead poisoning.
Also dangerous for humans
The Swiss Animal Protection organisation had game meat tested. Lead was detected in five out of 13 samples; two were almost double and four times above the permitted limit respectively.
