A lynx cleared for shooting by the authorities was killed by wildlife wardens in the early hours of Tuesday in Muotathal SZ.

The young male animal had killed nine sheep over the course of three nights in August.

According to a statement from the Schwyz Department of the Environment, the lynx was killed at 0:25 a.m. on Tuesday in the Chupferberg area. The wildlife wardens were reportedly equipped with modern night-vision technology.

Challenging terrain complicated the shooting

The lynx had begun killing sheep on 11 August. On 16 August, the Federal Office for the Environment cleared the animal for shooting. The weather conditions and the challenging terrain had complicated the shooting of the elusive animal, the Department of the Environment stated.

The lynx is a young male with a remarkable history. He had been found as an orphan in October 2023. After being nursed back to health at the Goldau Nature and Animal Park, he was released back into the wild last May. The animal was equipped with a GPS transmitter that reported its location every six hours.
