«In the Pack»
At least 26 wolves have been killed in the ongoing wolf regulation since 1 September 2026. No authority publishes a nationwide overview of the kills carried out. This counter therefore brings together the official figures from the cantons and is continuously updated. As of: 8 October 2026.
As of 8 October 2026: at least 26 kills

The three kills in the cross-cantonal pack Calanda2 are counted under Grisons. For Glarus, an SRF overview from 7 October cites one kill that the official sources reviewed do not confirm. It is not included in the count.
Reactive individual kills
Not included in the total is one reactive individual kill: on 5 September 2026, an adult female wolf was killed in Vérossaz, Valais.
Federal approvals: 37 packs
According to its overview of 4 October 2026, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has granted 39 approvals for preventive regulation. These concern 37 different packs in seven cantons. For four packs, complete removal has been authorised, and one further application is pending. How the approvals are distributed and how we assess them is set out in the interim report after five weeks.
For comparison: the 2025/26 period
For the previous period, the FOEN report 77 regulation kills reported: 76 under preventive regulation and one under reactive regulation.
How we count
- We count preventive regulation kills since 1 September 2026 that have been published by the federal government or the cantons themselves: in monitoring reports, media releases and tables.
- Media reports only count if they reproduce official figures from the authorities.
- Reactive individual kills are listed separately.
- Packs spanning several cantons are counted only once.
- The cantons publish their figures on different dates. Unpublished kills are missing, so the actual number may be higher.
The regulation period runs until 31 January 2027.
Updates
- 8 October 2026: counter launched. 26 preventive kills (Grisons 17, St. Gallen 5, Valais 2, Ticino 1, Schwyz 1) and 1 reactive individual kill (Valais).
Individual incidents are documented by our live tickers for Grisons, the Ticino and the Valais. Background information, figures and studies are compiled in the dossier «Wolf in Switzerland».
More on the subject of recreational hunting: In our dossiers on recreational hunting gather fact-checks, analyses and background reports. What the research says about this is shown by Hunting fact-checked: the state of research.
The position of IG Wild beim Wild: IG Wild beim Wild rejects recreational hunting. Our model is the canton of Geneva, which has managed without recreational hunting since 1974: without hunting seasons, without hunting dogs, without driven hunts, without high seats, without the animal cruelty and crime that go hand in hand with hunting season elsewhere. What has worked there for over fifty years disproves every position paper by JagdSchweiz. An association that bases its policy on claims it refutes in its own documents is not a professional organisation, but a factory for misinformation.
