Wildlife Receives Corridor Over the A3
Wildlife receives a new corridor over the A3. The wildlife overpass is intended to reconnect fragmented habitats.
The Federal Department for Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications has now approved the detailed design project, as announced by the Canton of Glarus.
With the 15.5 million franc wildlife overpass, the Biberlichopf wildlife corridor, which has been interrupted by the motorway for half a century, is to be rehabilitated. This is a corridor of national importance. It lies on one of the most significant wildlife migration routes between northeastern and southeastern Switzerland, as well as central Switzerland.
The new crossing, with a span of nearly 60 metres, will be constructed east of the Niederurnen motorway interchange. To help wildlife orient itself in the intensively farmed surrounding area, guiding structures will be created in addition to the bridge. These are designed to direct animals toward the crossing.
For this purpose, hedges and shrubs will be planted along drainage ditches. Throughout the entire corridor, more quality fruit orchards, individual trees and structures such as branch or stone piles will be established. While the federal road office builds the bridge, the cantons and municipalities are responsible for enhancements in the approach areas.
