Whatever happens, never run away
What to do when encountering a bear? Never run away. The bear is a traveller in Swiss border forests with Italy and Austria.
Bears are not dangerous to humans
According to WWF, there were 291 attacks by brown bears on humans in Europe over 15 years, 19 of them fatal. “The predator is fundamentally not dangerous to humans,” explains the Swiss bear expert David Bittner.
What to do in case of an encounter?
“In areas with bears, it is important to make yourself noticed. One should never run away.” In the event of an attack, WWF recommends throwing yourself to the ground and placing your hands over the back of your head. More on the topic of wildlife and species protection.
