50 wagons carrying hazardous materials derailed

On 3 February, around 50 train wagons derailed in the small town of East Palestine, 20 of which were carrying hazardous materials. Vinyl chloride, ethylhexyl acrylate and other chemicals entered the air, soil and waterways.

In the days following the derailment, around 3’500 fish died in nearby streams and waterways. 12 different species were affected shortly after the incident.

Affected animals

Taylor Holzer reported that several foxes had “swollen faces and watering eyes.” One fox died suddenly. “He was unable to blink or function properly as he died in my arms,” Holzer told Newsweek. More on the topic of Environment and conservation.
