Fatal hunting accident in Minnesota
Jay Nelson, the former police chief of Lake Park, was out on a recreational hunt when he was killed on the Yellowhead Trail in West Sugarbush Township on November 10, 2018.
«Senseless» and «without remorse» were the words of the retired police chief’s family as they sat in the courtroom to hear the verdict.
«The defendant had left Jay Nelson to die alone», said Minnesota Deputy Attorney General John Gross.
Sex offender with illegal weapon
Dodd admitted to hunting in the area on November 10. He stated that he was hunting with a Remington Model 700 .30-06 rifle. He said he had been afraid to come forward after hearing about the incident in the media, as he knew he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a sex offence conviction.
A jury convicted Dodd of manslaughter in connection with the hunting accident.
««My husband worked in law enforcement and was killed by a threat he was not aware of», said Sheila Nelson.
««Hunting is ruined for most of us. A family tradition was destroyed», said Nelson’s brother Chad Nelson.
Judge Jay Carlson sentenced him to 6½ years in prison.
