Time and again, terrible acts of violence by hobby hunters occur in Ticino.

Cases of mistaken identity during night hunting in Ticino

This is exactly what happened in mid-August 2021 in the Val Colla. This hunting accident occurred near the village of Scareglia. Other, unconfirmed reports speak of a second incident in recent days in which a sheep also lost its life in the Val Colla during recreational hunting. However, it was not possible to obtain information from the Office for Hunting and Fishing in Bellinzona.

This regrettable incident took place in the context of a selective hunting campaign known as «Guardiacampicoltura». In this context, the hobby hunters are not regulating anything at all — they are merely achieving short-term reductions.

The hunting season has not even begun yet, but these reports give an indication of what actually happens during recreational hunting once the nearly 3,000 licensed hunters in Ticino have their licences activated. By contrast, there are only 22 fully qualified, full-time game wardens with diplomas — one game warden for every 136 hobby hunters, responsible for ensuring law and order.

Charged with manslaughter

The 53-year-old hobby hunter from Mendrisiotto who accidentally killed a friend with a rifle shot while hunting in Pedrinate near Chiasso on 14 September 2019 must now face charges of manslaughter.
