The Wolf Helps the Forest Ecosystem

The wolf keeps prey populations in balance and promotes forest regeneration. A predator with a demonstrably positive effect on the ecosystem.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 10 August 2023

Wolf as a natural predator

The wolf plays an important role in forest regeneration.

As natural predators, they keep the population of prey animals such as deer or roe deer in balance. By reducing prey populations, these animals will feed less, allowing vegetation to regenerate.

Furthermore, the wolf also influences the behaviour of prey animals. When they know that wolves are in the area, they become more cautious and avoid certain zones, which gives the vegetation in those areas a chance to recover.

Fewer diseases thanks to wolves

The return of wolves to certain areas has shown that they have not only a positive impact on the ecology of the forest, but also on the health of other animal species. Since wolves are natural enemies of deer, and deer are often infested with ticks, the regulation of deer populations by wolves helps to limit the spread of disease.

The presence of wolves promotes biodiversity in the forest. By focusing on specific prey animals, they also indirectly influence the population of other species in the food chain.

Coexistence of humans and wolves

Various countries and organisations are working together to ensure the protection of wolves and to promote the coexistence of humans and wolves. This includes the implementation of measures to avoid conflicts, such as the construction of fences, the separation of grazing areas and forests, and the provision of compensation measures for livestock owners. The Geneva model demonstrates that wildlife management without hobby hunters is possible.

Overall, wolves are key players in forest ecology. Their presence contributes to the regulation of prey populations, the promotion of biodiversity, and the maintenance of a healthy and thriving forest ecosystem.
