The Lynx: Keystone Species for Biodiversity

The lynx is an important component of biodiversity and plays a vital role in the ecosystem.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 13 August 2023

Key player for Biodiversity

The lynx, also known as the «Eurasian lynx», is undoubtedly a key player for biodiversity in its natural habitats.

By regulating prey populations, the lynx influences the composition and distribution of other animal species in its habitat. By controlling the numbers of these prey animals, it helps to prevent overgrazing and overpopulation.

Threats to the Lynx

Unfortunately, the lynx is severely endangered in many regions and is subject to strict conservation measures. The main threats to the lynx are habitat loss, fragmentation, poaching and conflicts with human activities.

Poaching and illegal trade in lynx pelts also pose considerable threats. These activities have led to a drastic decline in lynx populations, particularly in some parts of Europe and Asia.

Conservation Measures for the Lynx

In order to preserve the lynx and its role in biodiversity, comprehensive conservation measures are required. These include the designation of protected areas, the restoration and maintenance of habitats, as well as the control of poaching and illegal trade.

By creating corridors between isolated habitats, we can reduce fragmentation and promote the exchange of lynx populations. By building positive relationships between humans and lynxes, we can foster understanding and acceptance. The Geneva model demonstrates that wildlife management can function without hobby hunters.
