Federal Council examines fur import ban

Planned fur import ban is insufficient – mandatory labelling for frog legs and foie gras products misses the mark.

Editorial team Wild beim Wild — 7 April 2023

The Federal Council is examining an import ban on fur and fur products produced through animal cruelty. The Swiss Animal Protection STS demands: An import ban must cover all fur products.

100 million animals per year for fur

Every year, 100 million animals die for the fur industry. The hobby hunting of free-living wild animals for the fur industry is also cruel. Traps are frequently used.

Federal Council diverts from the goal

The Federal Council is diverting attention from the actual goal with niche products such as frog legs or foie gras. The STS has identified around 20 production methods that are cruel to animals. Only an import ban can influence trade. More on the topic of animal rights and animal welfare.
