Foie Gras: Council of States Refuses to Abandon Animal Cruelty

The Council of States does not want to ban the import of foie gras into Switzerland. However, goose and duck liver from force-feeding production is to be subject to a mandatory declaration requirement in the future.

Council of States Overturns Ban

With a tied vote of 18:18, Council President Brigitte Häberli-Koller cast the deciding vote to overturn the import ban on foie gras. Instead, a mandatory labelling requirement is to be introduced. There are already at least 40 alternative products, 19 of them available in Switzerland.
