Opening of the Hobby Hunt in the Canton of Jura
The general hunting season in the Canton of Jura begins on Saturday, 1 October 2022.
Roe deer can be hunted for two months, as can wild boar, which have already been in the sights of hobby hunters since 1 June.
The Jurassian state intends to continue exerting strong pressure on wild boar, which have caused more damage compared to the previous year. The hunting of wild boar will continue until the end of February 2023 with stalking outings organized by the Jurassian Cantonal Hunters' Association.
During the general hunting season, which corresponds to the months of October and November, hobby hunters and their dogs will be active on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. This year, roe deer and wild boar will be tracked by 381 hunting licence holders.
The roe deer population remains stable and is in balance with its forest environment. It also allows predators such as the lynx to establish themselves permanently in the region. The hunting plan for roe deer permits the shooting of one adult male and one adult female, as well as one juvenile per person. It has remained unchanged since autumn 2000.
Damage caused by wild boar in agricultural areas declined last year, but has since increased significantly again since this spring (+30%). The state is once again counting on the commitment of hobby hunters in regulating this species, and in particular on the commitment of the hunting leaders of the three districts and their subordinates during the winter stalks. From December onwards, follow-up searches must help to reduce populations before the spring rest and birthing periods. Since 1 June, wild boar have already been hunted from hides, with 80 animals killed.
The hunting plan for chamois was fulfilled to 89% over the 12 hunting days in September (57 out of 64 possible chamois were shot), the canton states in a communiqué.
