New wolf pack confirmed in the canton of Vaud
A second wolf pack has established itself in the canton of Vaud. Its presence in the Risoud region in the Vallée de Joux has been confirmed.
The wolf continues to spread in the Romandy region as well.
Second pack in the Vaud Jura
A second pack established itself in the canton of Vaud during the past summer. The presence of the pack in the Risoud region in the Vallée de Joux in the Vaud Jura had been confirmed after a juvenile animal was observed in the area, the canton of Vaud announced on Friday, 24 September 2021.
The first wolf pack in the canton in 150 years has been roaming the region around the Marchairuz Pass since 2019. At the end of August, the FOEN authorised the culling of two young wolves from this pack after several livestock herds in the region had been attacked by the predators.
In the Vaud Alps, 28 sheep, 6 goats and one calf have been killed in attacks attributed to the wolf since the start of the summer season. In the Vaud Jura, 11 cattle and 4 goats were killed. To date, the young wolves have not been shot.
Adult wolves also in the crosshairs
In future, the Vaud cantonal government also wants to target older animals. The canton will submit a corresponding application to the Federal Office for the Environment.
The canton intends to carry out a risk assessment of the Jura mountain pastures in cooperation with livestock owners. Herds are also to be given more targeted protection.
