New Wildlife Overpass Zeiningen
A wildlife overpass in the form of a green bridge is being constructed on the A3 Augst-Birrfeld motorway near Zeiningen. Preparatory work outside the national road perimeter began in spring 2024. The main construction work in the motorway area begins in mid-October 2024 and will last approximately one year. During these works, lane shifts will occur in the construction zone on the motorway.
In 2001, the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN defined a total of 303 wildlife corridors of supra-regional significance.
These enable the intermingling of wildlife populations and thus promote the development of biodiversity. Among them is the wildlife corridor «AG No. 1 Möhlin-Wallbach», which connects the Aargau Jura with the southern Black Forest in Germany.
Due to various transport routes, this wildlife corridor is currently interrupted. To restore it, a crossing of the A3 Augst-Birrfeld motorway near Zeiningen is planned, among other measures. It spans the A3 motorway and a municipal road as a 50-metre-long, three-span reinforced concrete frame structure.
In parallel and in spatial proximity, the Canton of Aargau is realising an «eco-corridor» consisting of hedgerows, verges and meadows.
