Lower Saxony: Farmer Shreds Wild Boar Piglets
A farmer shreds nine wild boar piglets on a field in Lower Saxony. The act of animal cruelty causes outrage. Authorities are investigating.
In January, a farmer allegedly used a tractor to shred the mustard crop on a field in the municipality of Bovenden, killing nine wild boar piglets in the process.
Nine Piglets Killed
According to witness statements, the accused was aware that the piglets might be present in the field. PETA is joining the already ongoing criminal investigation with a formal complaint.
The act in Bovenden was a bloodbath: Around the dismembered bodies there were reportedly blood stains each measuring about one and a half square metres. In our view, the farmer negligently killed the animals, which were only a few weeks old.

Background on the Incident in Bovenden
After the farmer had killed the first two piglets with the shredder, he reportedly considered calling the hunting leaseholder but refrained from doing so. PETA therefore accuses the tractor driver of having knowingly accepted the deaths of the remaining animals.
Failure to Take Protective Measures Is a Criminal Offence
Legally binding convictions confirm that failure to take appropriate protective measures is a criminal offence. According to the Animal Welfare Act, it is prohibited to kill a vertebrate without a “reasonable justification”. If farmers do not have a thermal imaging camera in their vehicle, they are required to search the fields in advance.
