AKW Construction Ban Initiative Reaches 120’000 Signatures

The Stop-Blackout Initiative has collected 120'000 signatures and aims to repeal the ban on nuclear power plant construction in Switzerland.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 13 November 2023

The Stop-Blackout Initiative of the Swiss Energy Club has already reached 120’000 signatures.

It has thus cleared the required threshold of 100’000 signatures. The initiative aims to lift the ban on the construction of nuclear power plants in Switzerland.

The Energy Club is now in the process of certifying the collected signatures, wrote its president and Solothurn SVP politician Vanessa Meury.

The initiative was launched by conservative circles with the goal of being able to build nuclear power plants in Switzerland again. Without electricity, society and the economy would grind to a halt, the committee wrote at the launch in August 2022. And: “Switzerland must now urgently ensure a secure, independent, environmentally and climate-friendly electricity supply.”

Among other measures, it is proposed to enshrine in the constitution that “all climate-friendly forms of electricity generation shall be permissible.” This would once again make the construction of new nuclear power plants in Switzerland possible. The committee criticises the current prohibition as a “senseless technology ban.” The environmentally and climate-friendly combination of hydropower and nuclear energy, they argue, is being abandoned without good reason.
