Humanity weighs six times more than all wild animals combined
The biomass of wild land mammals is contributed primarily by large herbivores such as the white-tailed deer, the wild boar and the African elephant.
Livestock and humans dominate biomass
Wild land mammals weigh a total of approximately 22 million tonnes. The total biomass of mammals is predominantly dominated by livestock (~630 million t) and humans (~390 million t). Nearly half of the biomass of wild mammals is attributable to even-toed ungulates, which have benefited from the displacement of predators such as wolves .
Urgency of conservation efforts
This quantitative perspective can help dispel notions about the seemingly infinite ubiquity of wild animals and provide an argument for the urgency of conservation efforts. More on the topics of biodiversity and environment and nature conservation.
