Hobby hunter shoots llama in Muotathal
A hobby hunter in the Muotathal shoots a llama instead of a deer. He attempted to cover up the incident. PETA calls for a hunting ban.
Just over two weeks ago, a wildlife killer shot one of four llamas during the open hunting season.
Lead mare shot — a herd protection animal
The animals were grazing together with sheep at the entrance to Bisistal between Stahli and Suteren in the canton of Schwyz when the fatal shot was fired. Unfortunately, it was even the lead mare, writes the Luzerner Zeitung.
The farmer keeps the llamas as protection against the wolf or stray dogs. “The llama is not a flight animal like the sheep. When a wolf approaches, it tends to go and investigate what is coming. This disrupts the wolf’s hunting instinct. For the wolf, it then ceases to be prey”, he explains.
In Arcegno TI, a wildlife killer shot a llama in 2015 on a fenced pasture. A 130-kilogram llama was mistaken for a small deer in Valais in 2019, also by a hobby hunter.
Case referred to the public prosecutor
«The responsible hobby hunter contacted the relevant game warden by phone this morning and has been identified”, says hunting administrator Manuel Wyss from the Office for Forest and Nature, speaking to Blick.ch on 21.9.2021.
Comment from IG Wild beim Wild: The hobby hunter came forward this morning — after the media had reported on it — and not immediately after the incident. Why?
The cantonal game wardens, together with the Schwyz cantonal police, have launched an investigation into the matter. The public prosecutor’s office will subsequently take over the case.
