Recreational hunters create killing opportunities

A butcher is paid for killing animals. A recreational hunter, on the other hand, pays for the privilege of killing animals in his spare time.

Recreational hunters demand killing opportunities

Hardly have a few specimens of lynx or wolf appeared in the country before recreational hunters are already overwhelmed. Loudly, they demand killing opportunities across the land through revisions of the hunting laws.

In their pristine state — that is, where recreational hunters have not disrupted life and biodiversity in nature — wildlife populations exist that adapt dynamically. Predators, harsh winters, and so on ensure that mass proliferation does not occur. Recreational hunting fails as population control.

Recreational hunting pretends to be something it is not. Those who kill senselessly do not protect, and civilised society derives no benefit from it.

Hunters' tales and junk biology

Nevertheless, recreational hunters call themselves protectors of animals and nature. Many animal species once native to this region are still extinct or threatened with extinction — and this after a hundred years of huntsmen's stewardship. When recreational hunters speak of wildlife-biological connections, what they are really offering is hunters' tall tales and junk biology.

“Fair chase” has nothing to do with animal welfare either. The notion of fair chase upheld by recreational hunters is diametrically opposed to animal protection law.

Recreational hunters do not create habitat for wildlife, but killing opportunities for themselves.

IG Wild beim Wild

Recreational hunters make wildlife shy

According to scientific studies conducted in Austria, in 94% of all cases it was recreational hunters who caused wildlife to flee, 2% forestry workers, and only 4% recreational visitors. It is therefore the recreational hunters who make wildlife shy. Roe deer and red deer are not originally forest animals, but are active during the day in open landscapes. The Geneva model has shown since 1974 that professional wildlife management works without recreational hunters.

More on the subject of recreational hunting: In the dossier The Role and Criticism of Recreational Hunters we shed light on the training, power and self-image of recreational hunters. What the research says about this is shown by Hunting fact-checked: the state of research.

The position of IG Wild beim Wild: IG Wild beim Wild rejects recreational hunting. Our model is the canton of Geneva, which has managed without recreational hunting since 1974: without hunting seasons, without hunting dogs, without driven hunts, without high seats, without the animal cruelty and crime that go hand in hand with hunting season elsewhere. What has worked there for over fifty years disproves every position paper by JagdSchweiz. An association that bases its policy on claims it refutes in its own documents is not a professional organisation, but a factory for misinformation.
