Hidden cameras film animal cruelty in slaughterhouse
Animals were systematically mistreated and slaughtered without stunning — the operation was immediately closed and sealed.
Horrific footage from Hürth
Horrific footage has been released from the slaughterhouse «Mezbaha» in Hürth near Cologne. «The conditions in the facility resemble a horror film,» says Jan Peifer, Chairman of the Board of the German Animal Welfare Bureau.
The footage shows that sheep and cattle in particular were treated with extreme brutality. Sheep are literally dragged into the slaughter room by their legs and tails. «These people lack any empathy for animals», says Peifer.
Slaughter without stunning and without authorisation
The main allegation is that slaughter without prior stunning occurred repeatedly. Sheep were brutally forced to the ground and had their throats cut without prior stunning. Slaughter without stunning is fundamentally prohibited in Germany. The slaughterhouse did not hold an exemption permit.
Following the tip-off, the veterinary office sealed the slaughterhouse on 09.01.2023 and prohibited further slaughtering. «The veterinary office acted very quickly following our tip-off and closed the slaughterhouse,» says Peifer.
Recurring cases of animal cruelty in slaughterhouses
Two animal rights groups provided REPORT MAINZ with footage from two German slaughterhouses. The recordings show slaughterhouse workers and even civilians cutting the throats of sheep without stunning. Neither facility held an exemption permit. Both slaughterhouses were closed.
