Glarus: Fewer Kills of Red Deer and Roe Deer
In the canton of Glarus, the number of kills of red deer and roe deer in 2021 was lower than in the previous year. The presence of wolves could be a contributing factor.
Total kills of red deer and roe deer were lower in 2021 than in 2020. Chamois kills remained constant.
Culling in game reserves completed
The regulation of red deer, chamois, and roe deer within the framework of recreational hunting and culling carried out by professional game wardens has been completed since mid-December 2021. The canton of Glarus has three federal game reserves in which wildlife populations must be managed due to their size — covering around 18% of the canton's area — and their location above villages and settlements, in order to preserve the protective forest. This culling in the two game reserves of Schilt and Kärpf is carried out by the canton's professional game wardens, who are supported by volunteer hunters, as the canton states in a press release.
Wolf presence influences wildlife behaviour
Significantly fewer animals were killed among both red deer and roe deer compared to the previous year. This could be related to the presence of wolves — on the one hand through direct kills, and on the other through changed behaviour of the wildlife. In the case of red deer, the cancellation of the follow-up hunt due to snow conditions in December also played a role.
