Germany Against Trophy Hunting of Endangered Species
The Federal Government is withdrawing from the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation and taking a clear stance against trophy hunting.
Withdrawal from the International Hunting Council
The Federal Government is sending a strong signal against hobby hunting of endangered and internationally protected species. Following its withdrawal from the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC), it is making its position clear: the hunting of species whose populations are threatened should not take place as a matter of principle.
Germany is by far the largest importer of hunting trophies in the EU. There were 4’242 import transactions between 2016 and 2022, including 158 leopards, 143 African elephants, 112 lions and 51 cheetahs.
89 Percent Against Trophy Imports
“Germany, as a key country in the EU, must finally take responsibility and put a stop to the unnecessary killing of countless endangered animals,” says Thomas Schröder, Vice President of the German Nature Conservation Ring.
In a recent survey, 89 percent of German citizens expressed opposition to the import of hunting trophies. Several European countries have already enacted import bans. More on the topics of species conservation and hunting legislation.
