On World Milk Day
In agricultural livestock farming, cows are repeatedly subjected to forced artificial insemination in order to keep milk production consistently high. Just like human mothers, they are pregnant for nine months and only produce milk after giving birth. Mother cows and their calves share a close bond that lasts a lifetime. They care tenderly for their young. In agricultural livestock farming, however, this natural need is denied to them. Newborns are torn from their mothers shortly after birth — often both cry out for each other for days on end.
Massive Suffering in Milk Production
Around four million dairy cows are kept in Germany’s barns. Milk yields have been pushed to up to 50 litres per day. Approximately 40% of dairy cows are already exhausted and sent to slaughter by the age of four to five years.
Milk: A Climate Killer
Methane from milk production is around 28 times more harmful to the climate than CO₂. The Federal Association People for Animal Rights calls for an end to animal-based milk production. More on the topics of vegan nutrition, climate change and factory farming.
