In a new study by Curtin University, experts recommend replacing fireworks with more environmentally friendly drone and laser shows to avoid “extremely harmful” effects.
“Fireworks cause short-term noise and light disturbances, but the effects on wildlife can be far greater,” said Professor Bateman. “Fireworks also generate considerable quantities of highly toxic substances that contribute significantly to chemical pollution.”
Long-term effects on wildlife
The study confirmed that fireworks have long-term effects on wildlife. For example, the reproductive timing of sea lions on the Chilean coast changed due to New Year’s Eve fireworks. In California, fireworks in July are linked to a decline in cormorant colonies.
“The future of fireworks could lie in the use of safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives such as drones or lasers,” said Professor Bateman. More on the topic of environment and nature conservation.
