Frog leg appetite threatens amphibians
The EU imported approximately 40.7 million kilograms of frog legs between 2010 and 2019. That corresponds to roughly two billion frogs.
Two billion frogs imported
European demand for frog legs could drive amphibians into “irrreversible extinction,” warns a new study. Between 2010 and 2019, EU countries imported 40.7 million kilograms of frog legs, corresponding to approximately two billion frogs.
Also Switzerland imports around 65 tonnes of frog legs annually. Although all native frogs in Switzerland are protected, the import is legal.
Decline affects ecosystems
Frogs feed on insects. In areas where amphibians are hunted, the use of toxic pesticides tends to increase. Researchers are calling on the EU to channel all imports through a single central database. More on the topics of species protection and environment and nature conservation.
