Burger King: King of Cruelty
The animal welfare organisation L214 is launching a campaign against Burger King over the worst practices in chicken farming and slaughter.
This Friday, 15 October, L214 is launching a large-scale campaign to convince Burger King to take a stand against the worst practices in chicken farming and slaughter.
Satirical video exposes Burger King
To draw attention to Burger King’s practices, L214 will be broadcasting a satirical video from this Friday, in which the corporation, which presents itself as the “King of Burgers,” is portrayed above all as the “King of Cruelty” towards chickens.
Competitors KFC, Subway, and many other restaurant chains have already committed to eliminating the worst forms of factory farming from their chicken supply chains by adopting the measures of the European Chicken Commitment.
The protests initiated by the animal welfare organisation L214 aim to highlight Burger King’s failure to sign the European Chicken Commitment, a set of animal welfare standards developed by 25 animal welfare organisations.
“Animal welfare washing” instead of genuine commitment
Burger King states on its French website that chicken products bearing the Nature d’Éleveurs en Terre de France label come from “chickens born and raised in France, with a focus on ecological progress and animal welfare.»
However, L214 describes Burger King’s animal welfare statement as a form of “animal welfare washing,” in which companies spread misleading information to market meat.

L214 called Burger King the “King of Cruelty” because the company “continues to source meat from the worst intensive chicken farms.»
Brigitte Gothière, co-founder of L214, said that Burger King’s lack of commitment — even as it attempts to project a more modern and higher-quality image than its competitors — cannot be justified.
