Birds' escape from climate change made harder in the Alps
Birds are noticing climate change too. They are retreating to cooler areas, but natural barriers frequently stand in the way. This is shown by a new study.
Mountains and seas as barriers
Mountains and seas make it harder for birds to flee from climate change. Over the past 30 years, two thirds of European bird species have moved to cooler areas, on average 100 km further north.
Swiss Alps affected
The snow bunting, rock ptarmigan and water pipit remain at familiar altitudes. Crossing a lower-lying valley can become an obstacle for them. More on the topics of biodiversity, species protection and studies.
